From the International Literacy Association
"The Diversity Standard focuses on the need to prepare teachers to build and engage their students in a curriculum that places value on the diversity that exists in our society, as featured in elements such as race, ethnicity, class, gender, religion, and language. This standard is grounded in a set of principles and understandings that reflect a vision for a democratic and just society and inform the effective preparation of reading professionals." (ILA)
Service Project Reflection from Spring 2015
Diversity in the classroom is an ever changing factor of American schools. Classrooms are increasingly diversifying and becoming unique platforms for multi-cultural learning. In order to meet the needs of all of the students, educators must create an environment that welcomes and supports the students. While completing my undergraduate degree at James Madison University, I have had the opportunity to work at Blue Ridge Community College as an embedded math tutor. This experience has helped me gain insight into the needs of adult students, post high school students and English Language Learners (ELL). The following reflection is based on my experience in this setting.
